Typical Kitchen Remodel Timeline

June 24, 2025

Most standard kitchen remodels take 6–10 weeks of construction time once work begins. But that’s only one phase. Here’s how it breaks down:

1. Design & Planning: 3–6 weeks

Before any demo begins, we:

● Finalize layout and scope

● Coordinate with your designer (or help you find one)

● Lock in finish selections

● Confirm appliance dimensions

● Align on budget and schedule

This phase avoids surprises and helps prevent delays mid-construction

2. Permitting: 2–4 weeks

Depending on scope, we may need to submit for building, electrical, or plumbing permits. We handle this process for you, but jurisdiction timelines vary across Spokane, Kootenai, and Bonner counties.

3. Material Ordering & Lead Times: 2–8 weeks

Cabinets, custom counters, specialty fixtures, and even some appliances can take time to arrive. We don’t swing a hammer until the critical-path materials are either in hand or scheduled for timely delivery.

4. Construction: 6–10 weeks

This includes:

● Demo

● Rough-ins (plumbing, electrical, HVAC)

● Insulation & drywall

● Cabinets, flooring, and finishes

● Punch list and clean-up

🧱 What Can Shorten or Stretch the Timeline?

✅ Factors That Help Keep It Tight:

● Using in-stock materials

● Clear design decisions early

● Minimal layout changes (no moving plumbing or walls)

● Proactive communication with your contractor

⚠️ What Can Cause Delays:

● Changing plans or finishes midstream

● Custom cabinetry or counters with long lead times

● Permit backlogs

● Hidden surprises (e.g., water damage behind cabinets)

We work hard to flag potential issues early. It’s why we bring in trade partners and review plans thoroughly during pre-construction—not when your kitchen’s already torn out.

🧰 Real Talk: Living Through a Kitchen Remodel

If you stay in the home during the remodel, we’ll help you plan for a temporary kitchen setup. Many clients create a small cooking zone in the garage, dining room, or basement with a toaster oven, microwave, and coffee station.

It’s not glamorous—but it gets the job done.

We also make sure:

● You always know what’s happening each week

● Work is scheduled efficiently (no dead days)

● Dust and disruption are kept to a minimum

🧱 Example Project: Colbert Kitchen Refresh

We recently helped a Colbert family gut and rework their early-2000s kitchen. We:

● Knocked out a wall for better flow

● Updated all cabinets and flooring

● Installed new quartz counters and lighting

The entire job took 7 weeks from demo to final walkthrough, thanks to tight pre-planning and clear selections.

📌 The Bottom Line

If you’re planning a kitchen remodel in Spokane, Coeur d’Alene, or anywhere in North Idaho, expect:

● 2–3 months total, including planning and ordering

● 6–10 weeks of active construction, depending on scope

But more importantly—expect communication. At The Building Company, we don’t just build beautiful kitchens. We build trust through proactive planning and clear updates every step of the way

You can absolutely plan for aging in place without turning your home into a hospital room. The best remodels feel calmer, brighter, and easier to live in—not clinical. We approach it as good design first: safer paths, smarter lighting, better access,

If you’re remodeling an older Spokane home, the biggest thing to know is this: the pretty stuff comes after the structure. Before we talk cabinets or tile, we want to understand what’s behind the walls, under the floors, and around the foundation. That’s where older homes usually tell us what they need.

A lot of homeowners shop windows the same way they shop appliances. Look at the label. Compare the specs. Pick the best number. That matters. But in the real world, window performance is only part of the story. The best window in the world can still leak, rot, or underperform if it is installed poorly.
