Why Do Remodeling Quotes Vary So Much?
Most people get three remodeling quotes and expect the numbers to be close.
They usually aren’t.
That’s frustrating, but it’s also normal. A remodeling quote is not just a price tag. It’s a bundle of assumptions, allowances, labor quality, schedule, and risk. If two contractors are pricing different scopes, you are not comparing the same job.
The big reasons quotes differ
1. The scope is not actually the same
One bid may include demo, permits, disposal, drywall repair, paint, trim, and finish carpentry. Another may only cover the “main” work and leave the rest vague.
2. Material allowances are different
A quote with a low allowance for tile, cabinets, fixtures, or countertops can look cheaper on paper. Sometimes that’s intentional — a low allowance is used to make the project look cheaper than it really is.
But if the allowance is unrealistic, you’ll pay the difference later.
3. Labor quality is different
There is fast work, and there is careful work. Fast is cheaper. Careful costs more, but it usually saves money in the long run because fewer things get redone.
4. Risk is priced differently
Some contractors carry more overhead. Some have better systems. Some build in more cushion for problems. That can make one bid feel higher, but it may also mean fewer surprises.
What to compare instead of just price
If you want a fair comparison, line the bids up side by side and ask:
- Is the scope identical?
- Are permits included?
- Are demolition and disposal included?
- What are the allowances?
- Who is handling coordination?
- What is excluded?
- What happens if we uncover damage?
That’s where the real difference usually is.
The cheapest bid is not always the best bid
Sometimes it is just the least complete bid.
In construction, a low price can be real. It can also mean underbidding, missing scope, weak communication, or shortcuts you won’t see until later.
That’s why we like to talk about value, not just cost.
A good remodeling quote should tell you what you’re getting, what you’re not getting, and where the unknowns are.
If it doesn’t, it’s not a clean number.

When you’re hiring for a remodel, compare clarity, completeness, communication, schedule, and workmanship. Then compare price.
Not the other way around.
