How Long Does a Remodel Really Take? A Spokane & North Idaho Homeowner’s Guide

June 19, 2025

“How long is this going to take?”

It’s one of the first questions most homeowners ask—and for good reason. Remodeling means living in a space that’s changing daily. It disrupts routines. It involves dozens of moving parts. And let’s be honest—it often takes longer than people expect.

At The Building Company, we help homeowners across Spokane, Coeur d’Alene, Liberty Lake, and beyond plan for realistic, efficient timelines. This article will walk you through what affects your remodel schedule, what you can expect at each stage, and how we keep surprises to a minimum.

🕰️ There’s No One-Size-Fits-All Timeline

Remodels aren’t like fast food—they’re more like a five-course meal with a lot of prep. Your timeline depends heavily on:

  • Scope of work
  • Permit timelines in your city or county
  • Material lead times
  • Whether structural or design changes are involved
  • Trade availability and sequencing

A small bathroom remodel might take 4–6 weeks. A full kitchen? 8–12. A whole-home remodel or large addition? You’re often looking at 4–6 months from the first hammer swing—and that’s after design, permits, and pre-construction planning.

🧱 What’s Included in the Timeline?

Here’s a realistic breakdown of phases and how long each takes:

1. Initial Consultation & Design (2–6 weeks)

Depending on your project size, this could be a couple of meetings or a months-long design process with an architect or interior designer (we work closely with both).

⏱ Timeline Tip: This stage is often underestimated—especially if you’re making layout changes or structural modifications.

2. Estimating & Contracting (1–2 weeks)

We finalize scope, pricing, and contract terms here. If you’re still finalizing selections (tile, cabinets, etc.), this can overlap with pre-construction planning.

3. Permitting (2–6 weeks+)

This varies wildly depending on jurisdiction. Spokane and Kootenai Counties can process minor permits quickly, but complex projects, ADUs, or additions often take longer.

4. Pre-Construction Planning (1–2 weeks)

We set a job start date, confirm material orders, line up trades, and finalize your selections. This step prevents chaos later.

5. Construction Phase

Here’s a general sense of real-world build durations:

Project Type

Full Bathroom Remodel

Kitchen Remodel

Main Floor Overhaul

Major Addition

Whole-Home Renovation

Typical Duration

2–3 weeks

4–6 weeks

8–12 weeks

10–16 weeks

4–6+ months

6–12 months

Keep in mind: structural surprises, change orders, or backordered materials can all cause delays.

🚧 What Can Delay a Remodel?

Let’s be real—things do come up. Common reasons timelines stretch include:

  • Hidden problems (mold, rot, subpar framing)
  • Permit review changes
  • Late client decisions (at TBC we use a project development process that helps force your decisions along more quickly)
  • Change orders (adding or revising scope mid-project)
  • Weather (for additions or exterior work)

We build in schedule cushions, communicate early, and keep progress moving—even when challenges arise.

💬 How We Keep Timelines on Track

At The Building Company, here’s what we do to keep your remodel on schedule:

1. We plan before we swing a hammer.

This is paragraph text. Click it or hit the Manage Text button to change the font, color, size, format, and more. To set up site-wide paragraph and title styles, go to Site Theme.

2. We communicate like clockwork.

Weekly updates, clear milestone check-ins, and quick responses keep everyone aligned.

3. We don’t overload trades.

Our crews are scheduled with precision—not tossed between jobs like a hot potato.

4. We collaborate with your designer.

If your designer is still finalizing specs during framing, it will slow things down. We work hand-in-hand to avoid that.

🧭 So… How Long Will Your Remodel Take?

The real answer is: it depends on your home, your goals, and your timeline for decision-making. That said, we can help you define a realistic plan before you spend a dollar on drawings.

One of the most common questions homeowners ask—often right up front—is: “Can you just give me the final price right now?” It’s a fair question. Remodeling is a big investment, and you want to know what you’re signing up for.
