How Do I Prepare for Demo Day? What Spokane & North Idaho Homeowners Need to Know

July 9, 2025

It’s almost here — the day the old makes way for the new.

You’ve signed the contract. You’ve picked your finishes. The crew is lined up. Now it’s time for Demo Day — one of the biggest milestones in any remodel.

But what should you do to get ready?

At The Building Company, we help homeowners all over Spokane, Coeur d’Alene, and North Idaho avoid last-minute headaches. Here’s what we recommend before the first hammer swings.

📦 Clear the Space

It sounds obvious, but it’s amazing how many small items get left behind.

  • Empty all cabinets, drawers, and closets in the work area.
  • Remove anything on countertops or open shelves.
  • Take down wall art, window treatments, and decor near the demo zone.
  • If your kitchen or bath is being torn out, plan for where you’ll store and prep food or handle daily routines.

If you’re staying in the home during the remodel, we can help you plan a temporary kitchen or bathroom setup if needed.

🧹 Protect What’s Staying

Demo is dusty, loud, and messy — even with the best containment measures.

We install dust barriers, floor protection, and ventilation to limit mess. But you should:

  • Cover or remove furniture in adjacent rooms.
  • Take down or protect light fixtures nearby.
  • Secure valuables or sensitive electronics.

If you have pets, think about where they’ll be safe — demo days are loud and busy, and doors may be open as crews come and go.

🔌 Double-Check Utilities

We handle utility shut-offs, but it’s smart to confirm you know what’s happening. Will water be shut off? Will power to part of the house be disconnected for safety? Ask so there are no surprises — and so you don’t plan a big family dinner on the night the kitchen’s in pieces!

📋 Confirm Access

Make sure we know:

  • How crews will get in and out each day.
  • Where they should park.
  • Any neighborhood rules or HOA requirements for trucks, dumpsters, or street parking?

We handle permits, but if your area has tight access or special conditions, let’s plan ahead.

🧘‍♀️ Mentally Prepare, Too

Demo Day feels exciting — and sometimes unsettling. Your familiar space is about to look worse before it looks better. That’s normal.

Remember:

  • Dust and noise are part of the process.
  • It will get messy before it gets pretty.
  • Good communication is key — if something unexpected comes up behind the walls, we’ll walk you through next steps calmly and clearly.

🛠️ The Payoff

Once demo is done, the real transformation begins. Our crew and trusted trade partners work fast but carefully — staying clean, safe, and respectful of your home. And at every step, we keep you updated on what’s next.

At The Building Company, we’ve worked with families from Spokane Valley to Sandpoint through everything from kitchen gut jobs to full-scale home renovations. The answer? It depends—on what you’re remodeling, how your home is laid out, and how much disruption you’re willing to live with.

If you’ve never done a remodel before, the term change order might sound intimidating. Or maybe you’ve heard horror stories about contractors using surprise change orders to jack up the price mid-project.

If you’re planning a remodel, you’ve probably heard these words used interchangeably: estimate, quote, bid. But they’re not the same — and knowing the difference can save you from nasty surprises mid-project. At The Building Company, we think homeowners should understand what they’re looking at when they compare contra

One of the most common questions homeowners ask—often right up front—is: “Can you just give me the final price right now?” It’s a fair question. Remodeling is a big investment, and you want to know what you’re signing up for.

It’s a fair question—and one we’ve heard more than once. “If you’re using subcontractors for the plumbing, electrical, and finish work… what exactly does The Building Company do?” The short answer? A lot more than you might think.

If you’re planning a commercial renovation or tenant improvement in Spokane, Coeur d’Alene, or anywhere in the Inland Northwest, you’ve probably heard the term design-build. And maybe you're wondering: “Isn’t that just for residential projects?” Or: “We already have an architect—why involve a builder now?”

Let’s cut right to it: no one dreams of brushing their teeth in the utility sink or cooking dinner in a makeshift kitchen on the patio. But when you're remodeling your home—especially a kitchen, bathroom, or main floor—it’s a real possibility.

You’ve found the space. You’ve got a vision. Maybe it’s a new tenant moving in, or maybe your own business has outgrown its surroundings. But before you start tearing out walls or sketching floor plans on a napkin, there are a few things you should know.
